Experiencing Communities: South East Australia Road Trip CERES Community Environment Park

In April 2017, our CERES Global facilitator and all round seasoned traveler Ben Walta, and Don Butcher wilderness and conservation legend headed a group on a local journey of sustainable communities. Exploring the unexplored through South East of Australia, the group embarked on a trip connecting alternative, sustainable, indigenous communities, and experienced the incredible natural environment Australia has to offer.

In the past we have worked with international organisations for over 10 years, nurturing relationships, and working alongside community development organisations that foster social and environmental sustainability. For this purpose we believed it was important to understand the local organisations, and people that sustain these practices, within Australia. This was our first trip around rural Victoria, and New South Whales, exploring these developments.

Journey Map

Our journey began at Agari Permaculture Farm, located just a few hours from Melbourne. The 120 acre farm hosts a variety of workshops such as natural building, permaculture, and natural health remedies. We got hands on whilst there, helping out with building the first Vi...

From The Classroom To The Creek: An Excursion At CERES CERES Community Environment Park

By Lucy Dowling-Brown, CERES Communications Intern

It is Friday morning and the sky is a slate grey ceiling above the swarming primary school children. They are buzzing with excitement, running past each other in a sea of mustard yellow and navy blue uniforms. Today is excursion day for grade two at CERES Environment Park. As the teachers attempt to quieten the group, birds fly overhead and chickens cluck in the distance.

Today the children of St Raphaels Primary School are here to learn about the culture of Indigenous Australians. When CERES was founded in 1982, one of its fundamental goals was to provide environmental education to the community. Evident throughout the rich culture of Indigenous Australians, is their deep connection to the native environment. The land is so revered in Indigenous culture that many Elders, such as Bob Randall of the Yankunytjatjara people, view the land as another family member and have a deep responsibility within their culture to take care of the natural environment. This connection to the earth is prevalent throughout much of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and is one of the key values here at CERES.

CERES Educator, Claire Mosley, impresses these ideas upon the children of St Raphaels during her walk along the Merri Creek. She discusses the history of the local environment and urges the children to consider how it has changed and been damaged since the Wurundjeri indigenous community inhabited it, to now.

I want you to think about the beautiful, pristine places of the Aboriginal times that have changed so much she says.

Through this walk along the Merri Creek, the children are given the opportunity to connect wider environmental issues, such as pollution, with their local environment.

Overnight baked sourdough doughnuts Green Gourmet Giraffe

After a long wait, yesterday was a glorious spring day of 29 C as the school holidays started.  So too, yesterday saw the end of my wait to find a good overnight sourdough doughnut recipe.  I've looked, I've mulled over it, I've gone back to my yeasted doughnut recipe, I've even tried a really unsuccessful doughnut recipe last weekend before finally hitting the jackpot yesterday.

I bought a doughnut cutter some years ago and it has turned out to be a very useful investment, especially now that Sylvia is suddenly into all things doughnut.  It means that I have always made yeasted doughnut dough that is rolled and cut out.  Recently I have been looking for a doughnut tin that I can pour batter into so I can use different doughnut recipes.  (Actually I dreamt I bought one last night but it had some weird grills on it that did not make sense!)

After looking for the recipe I wanted, I ended up using my overnight sourdough bread recipe, my yeasted doughnut recipe and Gemma's no knead donut recipe.  I gave some thought to what was needed for the dough - a bit of...

3 Songs for 3CR "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

3 Songs for 3CR - Nordanlaat

Each year The Boite and Music Sans Frontieres invite musicians and singers to donate 3 songs, in an acoustic concert at The Boite World Music Cafe, 1 Mark Street, North Fitzroy. Each year its a spectacularly creative and entertaining night of music that raises money for the 3CR Radiothon. In a year when significant music programs and broadcasters have been cut from national radio, the importance of shows like Music Sans Frontieres on broadcasters like 3CR cannot be overstated. It becomes harder and harder for local musicians to get a hearing! 3 Songs for 3CR is an opportunity to show support and ensure the healthy, ongoing life of Music Sans Frontieres on 3CR. Head here for more information and bookings.

An Urgent Call-to-Action "IndyWatch Feed Food"

Hi, this is Geoff,

This is the first time in ages that Ive put together a special video bringing attention to something that needs to be actioned immediately. After you watch it, I think youll understand my sense of urgency. With it, we start off the Friday Five

Paradise Threatened: The Los Cedros Biological Reserve is under serious threat. This utterly unique reserve is deeply important to me, personally, and should be important to every creature on Earth. I outline why this is the case in an impassioned 6-minute video I put together expressly for this. If after watching it you want to learn more about Los Cedros and what you can do to help, please take a look at this in-depth piece just published at our sister-site, www.PermacultureNews.org. Links to a background video about Los Cedros, an online petition, and a fundraiser are all included.

Food Rescuers: Switching tone from a paradise under threat to something decidedly positive and full of optimism I love this project, home-grown right here in Australia: OzHarvest is the leading food rescue organisation in Australia, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it direct to more than 900 charities who support people in need across Australia. It operates in in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Newcastle and Perth and in regional communities across the country and since 2004, has delivered over 60 million meals and saved more than 20,000 tonnes of food from ending up in landfill. 63 MILLION MEALS thats incredible, and worthy of our admiration. A quick overview video here, and complete information about OzHarvest here....
